INDIVIDUALISM VS COLLECTIVISM
In terms of other values, individualism is the mainstream. British are more individualistic and independent than Hong Kongers. Most students in my host institution do not mind working alone while students in Hong Kong prefer working collectively or at least in a group. For instance, they would go running or shopping by themselves. And the majority of them keep a pet as a companion.
In addition, UK students were surprised that Hong Kong university students live with their parents. Nearly all of them rent houses with friends. Thus, their sense of family is not as strong as Asians’. They believe that once they are grown up, they should no longer live under the protection of their parents and, therefore, they should move out.
This value does not surprise me as I have heard it before departure. Still, I have started getting used to this value and do not mind being alone. Balance between collectivism and individualism cause no harm but benefits my life.
