WORK LIFE BALANCE
Most of the shops are closed before 6 P.M.
The streets turn quiet after 6P.M.
You can barely see shoppers after 6 P.M.
“We tend to focus too much on how to survive,
and we forget how to live.”
Stranger than Fiction
The British advocate quality life. They can strike a balance between work and leisure, not being obsessed by either entertainment or work. Many stores are already closed at 5p.m. on weekdays and around 3p.m. on weekends, which would cause murmurings of the shoppers if it happens in Hong Kong. However, most people here do not have problems with it as the majority of them knock off before 6p.m.. They consider rest and leisure as vital as or even more valuable than earnings, showing that their life is not materialistic but simple.
On the contrary, Hong Kong people quantify their life. Most of the shops in Hong Kong close at 10pm or even later. To Hong Kong people, it is necessary as Hong Kong is an advanced city and trading center. Everything has to be convenient. What is more important, people believe work till late implies they are hard-working, which is a virtue in Chinese definition. Besides, they want to earn as much as possible.
